Island Hopping in Australia
February 2010
Australia is often called the island continent, although with over 8,000 islands within its maritime borders, this is something of a contradiction in terms. With so many islands to explore, the possibilities for your next island adventure are endless.
From the tropical islands of the north to the wild islands of the south, YHA ventures to four of our favorites to discover that there is more to island life than pina coladas!
Phillip Island, Victoria
Located approximately 140kms south of Melbourne, Phillip Island is a place of natural beauty, sandy beaches, tranquil wetlands and unique wildlife experiences.
Home to the famous Penguin Parade at Phillip Island Nature Park where thousands of Little Penguins amble ashore every evening, Phillip Island also offers excellent bird watching opportunities, a diverse range of established walks around the island and the chance to see Australia’s largest colony of fur seals frolic, live and breed.
For the true Philip Island experience, base yourself at the brand new Melbourne Central YHA on Flinders Street for two nights and enjoy a day tour to Phillip Island where you will visit the Wildlife Park to cuddle a baby wombat, hand feed kangaroos and get up close to koalas. Then enjoy a delicious pizza dinner before the famous Penguin Parade! Find out more about the Penguins Parade & Melbourne combo.
Kangaroo Island, South Australia
Kangaroo Island, off the coast of South Australia, is Australia’s third largest island. With over a quarter of the island conserved in National Parks, Conservation Parks, and five Wilderness Protection Areas, the wild and rugged landscape is teaming with wildlife, causing some to label it Australia’s very own Galapagos!
And if its natural diversity isn’t enough, Kangaroo Island has a rich and fascinating history, thriving arts community, and produces some of Australia’s finest gourmet foods!
Give Kangaroo Island the attention it deserves with a two night stay and a full day taking in all the fantastic sights. Avoid the early morning by taking the afternoon coach and ferry from Adelaide. An early evening arrival at the Kangaroo Island YHA will give you time to have a swim in beautiful Hog Bay before spending the following day exploring Seal Bay, Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks. A morning ferry and coach connection the following day will have you arriving in Adelaide 11.30am. Find about more about the Kangaroo Island 3-day Super Special.
Magnetic Island, Queensland
Lose yourself in the force of the enchanting Magnetic Island. The World Heritage Listed island is an easy 25 minute cruise from Townsville and is a haven for native wildlife including over 100 species of birdlife, Northern Australia’s largest colony of Koalas, and an abundance of tropical fish and marine life.
It’s easy to experience Australian wildlife in the tropical island setting of Magnetic Island at Bungalow Bay YHA. Interact with koalas, crocodiles, snakes and lizards at the Koala Sanctuary during a 2 night stay at Bungalow Bay YHA! Find out more about the Magnetic Koala Express.
Rottnest Island, Western Australia
Rottnest Island is WA’s very own island getaway. It boasts some of the world's finest beaches and bay, providing a spectacular venue for snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, and swimming. As a protected Class A reserve, and with a Marine Reserve spanning 1700 hectares, Rottnest Island is home to a diverse range of unusual animals, plants and marine life.
With no cars and 63 sheltered beaches to choose from, there is a relaxed feeling on Rottnest. The best way to explore, from finding your perfect beach to taking in the colonial streetscape and architecture is by bike.
Rottnest is an easy day trip from Perth or Fremantle. Take the Ferry to Rottnest Island and while you’re there enjoy a river cruise, bike hire (including helmet and lock) and snorkel in the clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Find out more about the Rottnest Island Ferry, Bike & Snorkle Package.
While you’re experience island living, it never hurts to ask for a discount on transport, tours, food and activities – especially if you’ve got a YHA or Hostelling International card in your wallet.
